In 1996, my wife who is a triple-board certified medical doctor and I noticed that something wasn’t right with our 7-year-old middle son. He was accident prone, didn’t know his alphabet, and it turned out that he had a mirror image reversal disorder in addition to ADHD.
We went through a brain development program that worked wonders, not only for him, but our other two sons. We started an office helping others in the Portland, Oregon area where our company grew until we had offices and providers from Eugene, Oregon in the south, through Salem, the Portland/Vancouver area, and up to Olympia, Washington in the north. We had counselors, social workers, a PsyD and an MD on staff. Together we honed the program until we were years ahead of the “alleged” state of the art, often getting results that were 3-5 times better than the best of other programs (based upon research presented at the Learning Disability Association of America’s annual conferences). Unfortunately, the recession of 2008 closed that company. Rather than stopping services, we elected to continue helping families privately through word-of-mouth referrals. A good thing is hard to keep private and the invaluable knowledge that Sharper Minds has developed over the years should be shared widely.
